FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Highland Country Club Prepares For 2017 Freedom 55 Financial Championship   [Download .doc version]

March 21, 2017 (London, ONT) - As Highland Country Club in London, Ont. prepares to host the Freedom 55 Financial Championship, added opportunities for corporate sponsors and fans, in addition to continued community support, promise to make this year's tournament an overwhelming success.

This year's tournament, September 11-17, marks the third straight year (2015-17) for Highland CC as host, and fifth year for London as host of the Mackenzie Tour - PGA TOUR Canada's season-ending championship. Tickets, weekly clubhouse passes and sponsorship opportunities are now available.

France's Paul Barjon posted a final-round 2-under 68, winning the 2016 Freedom 55 Financial Championship by a stroke over French Polynesia's Vaita Guillaume at 22-under 258, a Mackenzie Tour record. Order of Merit standings saw 'The Five' earn full status on the 2017 Tour: Americans Dan McCarthy, Brock Mackenzie, Taylor Moore and Aaron Wise; and Adam Cornelson of Langley, B.C., winner of the Dan Halldorson Trophy as Freedom 55 Financial Canadian Player of the Year.

The Mackenzie Tour season begins with the Freedom 55 Financial Open (May 29-June 4) at Point Grey Golf and Country Club in Vancouver, B.C., with purses of $175,000 for the first 11 events and a $200,000 purse for the season-ending Freedom 55 Financial Championship at Highland CC.

"Our host organizations have done tremendous work to establish our tournaments for this season, and thanks to the support of our sponsors we have a wonderful slate of events from coast to coast again this year," said Mackenzie Tour President Jeff Monday.

The host committee at Highland CC is unveiling exciting additions to this year's tournament, including:

  • A return to the original 18-hole layout, beginning with traditional hole No. 1, a 510-yard par-5;
  • Hole No. 18 grandstand offering value-added hospitality and viewing opportunities;
  • Three Pro-Am tournaments: a closed King's University College tournament on Monday, Sept. 11; a Women's Pro-Am morning of Tuesday, Sept. 12; and traditional Tuesday afternoon Pro-Am. All Pro-Am participants are welcomed to attend a Monday evening reception at the tournament host hotel, Four Points by Sheraton London;
  • The Women's Pro-Am, chaired by Ontario Golf Hall of Fame inductee Patty Howard, also includes a dinner and fashion show following the Pro-Am tournament;
  • Additional corporate sponsor opportunities, outlined at the tournament website;
  • Continued free junior passes, available at the gate on tournament day;
  • Continued support of Thames Valley Children's Centre as the tournament beneficiary.

In 2015 and '16 at Highland CC, the Freedom 55 Financial Championship raised more than $125,000 for Thames Valley CC. The tournament has raised more than $260,000 for local charities since 2013. Charitable donations by Mackenzie Tour events in 2016 totalled $1,054,181.

"The success of the Championship increases each year. Not only are we excited about the calibre of players we're seeing, we're also seeing attendance increase year over year," said Mike Cunneen, Senior Vice-President, Freedom 55 Financial. "And the best part is the support we can provide to Thames Valley Children's Centre."

Mike Silver, tournament director with the Highland CC host committee, said strengthening community ties, and enhancing the golf experience, go hand in hand this year. "This isn't just Highland's tournament. It's London's tournament," Silver said. "When you think about how Augusta National stages the Masters Tournament year after year, that is the kind of legacy we are building here at Highland. It's all about the community, and Thames Valley Children's Centre."

Volunteers may register online at Purchase $10 anyday grounds tickets, $20 weekly passes and $40 weekly clubhouse passes at the Highland CC office, 1922 Highland Heights, London from Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tickets will also be available at the gate during tournament week.
